What do you need to Integrate?
#1--MOTIVATION!
Motivation to stick it out and give it a shot, knowing that there may be problems. #2 -- PERSEVERANCE Let's face it, problems happen. Instead of the copy machine going down we now deal with internet speeds or crashes. Don't get discouraged, just initiate your back up plan! #3- CURIOSITY Never be raid to say, "I don't know, go try it and see". I find myself saying that very often when integrating. Students are curious, so be curious with them. |
Integration vs. "Just Using"
There is a difference between just using the technology to integrating it into the learning process to active your lesson goals. Years ago just having students make a word document or play a learning game was considered top of the line integration, now the bar is much higher.

Quick List of a few Things i Use...
Technology Wall
One more thing right? Well, don't think of it that way.
If you are integrating technology and students re using it regurlarly there are many things they will discover on their own. As adults we have our ways to find those answers, but I have noticed that students are natural "button pushers" when it comes to technology. What is a button pusher? Some adults are worried when using technology and that worry hinders them from exprimenting with the technology. Our natural curiousity has diminished with age. Sad right. Students are curious. And with that curiosity they "push the buttons" that adults may not push. My kids figure out ways around things or how to solve the problem they find on their own, without google. Problem solving is everywhere.
The Wall
Target & Look What We Can Do
If you are using a new app or need them to master something for the future give them a target. "I can upload files to my Goggle Drive from the iPad and desktop so that I can use them on other devices." When that target is mastered I move it to the "Look What We Can Do" area.
Tips & Tricks
This area is great for student and you as the teacher to publish tips and tricks to the things you work with. Little reminders and troubleshooting for the students to reference as help or reminders. For example from one of my students, "If you use PicCollage and run out of the 30 items just save what you have on the camera roll and the load it as the background so you get 30 more!". Now if you haven't used PicCollage this may sound Greek to you but to the students in the room this solved a problem they kept having during a project we were completing.
Pictures are coming soon. I moved campuses so this was regrettably taken down prior to the good stuff.

"I Don't Know"
This isn't a phrase generally used in a classroom. Well, I'll tell you something I use it often and it is amazing what happens when I do. The kids have to think. The biggest hurdle for the adult sometimes is letting go and not controlling every aspect of the activity.
S: "Can I use this app for the presentation?"
Me: "I don't know. Does it do what you need it to?"
S: "I don't know? If not can I switch to something else?"
Me: "Well, of course. Just stick to the time frame for the due date, but since your trying something new if you need more time we can talk about it."
Student discovers a new app and then teaches us what they know about it and is now an expert for it.

This phrase is so commonly used in my room during projects, PBLs, and even work periods some times my students start giving me "the look". You know the one that we usually give them when they say it. Well, it is even better to be the one receiving it and them coming back later excited about what they did and tried, even if it didn't work.
At the beginning of the year, expect a few to look at you like you have lost your mind. Teachers are supposed to know, all the time, and for some they may not be used to the freedom. I use it gently with guidance at first, but as the year progresses I get a bit more elaborate with my expressions since they are used to it.

Smore Reports & Website Publishing
Allowing students to compile their findings for their research into an interactive SMORE Flyer or Website are great ways for students to build and showcase their nonfiction reports and PBL Projects. For both the students preferred to use a laptop since the web versions were faster and had more capabilities than trying to use the tablets to build their projects. |
