Point to Ponder
A classroom has a few lanes of communication. I like to focus on the Parent-Teacher-Student platform.
Considering this is becoming nothing short of a full digital age, more and more parents and students have digital devices in front of them daily. So, wouldn't it make sense to make the classroom more digital so that we are in line with this digital age?

News & Events
Well, social media is clearly taking the lead in this. There are many pros and cons to using these platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. These platforms are mainly considered "open" platforms. This can become concerning with privacy laws and rules, as well as giving parents a peace of mind that their student isn't out there for all in the world to find and see. So, if you choose to use those be careful. Reviewing the privacy rules to any sort of "open" platform type of media isn't enough. Learn those rules and what they exactly mean. Check the rules frequently for changes or additions.
Since those two platforms are widely used already I will touch on a few other platforms that can be used. These have the ability to "invite only" or require the viewer to sign up or be invited to receive access to the information.

Newsletters are a requirement in most schools. Prior to email and the vast digital age we have now printing a newsletter was the fastest and easiest way to communicate. Well, in this 4G world a old style newsletter isn't always the best way to reach people.
SMORE offers the ability to create a newsletter that is built to handle a 4G world and the "free" features can accommodate any classroom just fine. Text, video links, contact, and the ability to download and print to a PDF gives you the ability to look sharp and digital but still be able to print for everyone else who needs it. These can be private and only usable through a link you send out, and can be embedded into any website you run. I use this in my classroom, and to send information about the technology world to collegues. Check them out below. Feel free to subscribe! |
Class Dojo does more than it used to. If you want to use Twitter or Facebook for your class, but just want more security and privacy then try out Dojo. This little gem has grown tremendously in its capabilities. Check out these two newer features to this oldie but goodie.

Remind 101 is a great way to stay connected quickly to parents. If you are some one who would rather not give out your personal phone number, then try this out. With just an invite code parents can begin receiving messages from you quickly and easily. you can set up different class accounts or groups. This is perfect for running separate messaging locations for different groups or alerts.

Definitely a hit for people at the moment you can use twitter to give a window into your classroom and run a feed with just a hashtag!
I recommend starting a class account that is completely different from your personal account and setting to be as private as possible. Also, check with your district to see what the rules are for using a social media outlet for your classroom. |
